A couple stands on the grand marble staircase inside San Francisco City Hall, light falling from the rotunda four stories up. No decoration touches it. The building does the work, and a photographer's only job is to be in the right place when the two of you forget the camera is there.
I am based in Sacramento and travel into the Bay Area often, because the region rewards a photographer who reads its weather. The Bay is not one place. It is a dozen small climates stacked against each other, and a wedding an hour apart can sit in full sun or grey marine layer on the same afternoon. Knowing which is which is most of the planning.
The fog is a feature, not a problem
Newcomers to Bay Area weddings brace against the fog. The couples who love their photographs learn to use it. Marine layer rolls in off the Pacific through the summer, thickest at the coast and in the morning, thinning as you move inland and later in the day. It flattens contrast and turns harsh noon into soft, even light, which is kind to skin and to a white dress. A foggy ceremony at Lands End reads as moody and cinematic. The same hour in full inland sun would fight you.
The trade is predictability. If clear blue sky matters to you, a September or October wedding in the city gives the best odds, the warm, still weeks locals call the real summer. If atmosphere matters more, embrace June and shoot toward the coast.
Places that shape a Bay Area wedding
The region hands you architecture and coastline in equal measure. A few public landmarks worth knowing before you set a timeline:
01.San Francisco City Hall
A Beaux-Arts building with one of the tallest domes in the country and a marble staircase built for exactly this. Civil ceremonies happen by appointment in the rotunda, and the light through the upper windows is best in late morning. It is among the most photographed wedding spots in the state for a reason, and it stays elegant with almost nothing added.
02.Palace of Fine Arts
Bernard Maybeck designed it for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, and its rotunda, colonnade, and lagoon remain a public park in the Marina district. The scale gives portraits a sense of stillness. Early morning keeps the crowds and the parking manageable.
03.Lands End & the coast
Cypress groves, the ruins of the Sutro Baths, and the open Pacific sit inside the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on the city's northwest edge. This is the coastal, wind-and-fog end of a Bay Area day. Sturdy shoes and a layer make it comfortable.
04.Napa & Sonoma wine country
An hour north, the vineyards run their own calendar. Harvest, the crush, arrives late August into October, when the vine rows carry colour and the estates are at their most alive. Summer afternoons here are hot and bright, so evening portraits do the heavy lifting.
On travel time
Bay Area distances are measured in traffic, not miles. City Hall to the coast is short on a map and long at five o'clock. When we build the timeline, we plan the drive between the ceremony and the portrait location as carefully as the light.
