A session is a couple of hours outdoors, usually in the last light of the day. The clothes only need to do three things. Sit well together, catch the light, and let you move.
Coordinate, do not match

Pick a small palette of two or three colours that live in the same family, then let each person wear their own version of it. One of you in a warm cream, the other in a deeper rust or olive, reads as a couple who belong together rather than a uniform.

Let the location set the tone
Where you shoot should steer the palette. In a rose garden or an oak grove, earthy neutrals let the greenery and the low sun do the colour work. Choose fabric that moves
Movement is what makes a photograph feel alive. A skirt or dress with some length and flow catches the wind and the light in a way a stiff, fitted outfit never will. Linen, chiffon, soft knits, and anything with a little drape all move well. Bring texture too. A knit, a suede, a bit of lace gives a frame something to hold, especially in the soft light of evening when colour goes quiet.
Dress for the weather you will actually be in
Northern California is several climates at once, and the session will not wait for perfect conditions. A Sacramento summer evening is warm and dry, so breathable fabrics keep you comfortable through a long golden hour. The coast is the opposite: wind off the Pacific and a marine layer can make a July evening genuinely cold, so bring a layer even when the forecast looks kind. Spring and fall in the valley are mild but cool quickly after sunset. A jacket or a wrap that suits the palette is never wasted, and it often becomes a favourite frame.
The small things that quietly matter
- Skip tight patterns, neon, and large logos. They pull the eye off your faces and date a photograph fast.
- Break in your shoes, or bring a comfortable second pair for the walking between spots. Sore feet show in body language.
- Your hands feature more than you expect, especially with a ring. Tidy nails are a small thing that reads.
- Two looks give a session range: something relaxed to start, something dressed up for the last light. Keep the changes simple, a swapped jacket or a second dress is plenty.
- Iron the night before. Wrinkles are one of the few things that are genuinely hard to fix later.
