An engagement session is the best way to feel at ease with a camera before the wedding, and honestly, it is just a good evening out. We walk, we talk, you two stay yourselves, and I catch what is already there.
Most sessions run an hour or two. No stiff poses. I give small, natural prompts, then step back. Ten minutes in, most couples forget I am there, which is exactly the point. Because I am based here, we plan the session around the light and the season rather than forcing both to cooperate on the wrong evening.
When to shoot in Sacramento
Timing decides more than location. Sacramento summers are hot and dry, with July and August afternoons often above 95 degrees. In those months we shoot the last hour before sunset, when the heat breaks, the Delta breeze comes up off the river, and the light turns gold and low. Spring is the gentlest season for photographs: green hills, long evenings, and blossom on the trees through March and April. October holds warm, mild afternoons and the first colour along the American River. Even winter has its gift, the soft tule fog that settles over the valley on still mornings.
Book the session to end at sunset, not to start at a round hour. The final sixty to ninety minutes of daylight flatter everyone, and in a Sacramento summer they are also the only comfortable ones.
A few easy places to start
Sacramento hands you gardens, a river, and an old brick downtown inside a short drive. Three that are simple to work with:
01.McKinley Park Rose Garden
A public rose garden in East Sacramento with well over a thousand bushes, at its fullest in late April and May. Colour, scent, and soft green backdrops, all inside the city grid.
02.Old Sacramento & the riverfront
Wooden boardwalks, gold-rush brick, and the Sacramento River with the gold Tower Bridge behind it. The cobblestones and warehouse walls give a session texture that a manicured park cannot.
03.The American River bluffs
Oak woodland and sandy river beaches along the American River Parkway feel a world away from downtown while sitting minutes from it. Good for couples who want the session to feel like a walk, not a photo shoot.
