Sacramento is an easy city to photograph in. Inside a fifteen-minute drive you can go from a public rose garden to a gold-rush waterfront to a sandy river beach, and each one asks for a different season and a different hour of light. These are the settings I come back to, grouped by the feeling they give a session.
One rule cuts across all of them. In a Sacramento summer, shoot the last ninety minutes before sunset. The heat breaks, the Delta breeze arrives off the river, and the light goes low and warm. Everything below is planned around that window.

I.McKinley Park Rose Garden
In East Sacramento, a public garden of well over a thousand rose bushes reaches its fullest in late April and May. Colour, scent, and soft green everywhere. It is popular, so a weekday evening or an early Saturday keeps the paths open.

II.Capitol Park camellias
The forty acres around the State Capitol hold the camellias that earned Sacramento its Camellia City name, at their peak from late winter into early spring. The old labeled trees and formal walks give a session a settled, downtown-adjacent frame in the months before the roses arrive.

III.William Land Park & the WPA Rose Garden
South of downtown, a rose garden built in the 1930s sits among old oaks and open lawns. There is room to wander here, which suits couples who want the session to feel unhurried rather than posed.

IV.UC Davis Arboretum
A short drive west in Davis, this free public garden runs along Putah Creek for roughly a hundred acres, with a coast redwood grove and native plant collections. It stays green and shaded when the city bakes, which makes it a summer refuge for both of you and the camera.

V.The American River confluence
Where the American River meets the Sacramento, sandy beaches open up near Discovery Park with a clear line back to the Tower Bridge and the downtown skyline. It reads as wide, calm, and open, and the west-facing water catches sunset directly.

VI.American River Parkway & the bluffs
Oak woodland and quiet river beaches follow the parkway for miles through the city. Near Effie Yeaw and Ancil Hoffman Park in Carmichael, the oak groves feel remote though they sit minutes from suburbs. Mornings and late afternoons are calmest.

VII.Old Sacramento Waterfront
Wooden boardwalks, gold-rush brick, and the Sacramento River with the gold Tower Bridge behind it. The cobblestones and warehouse walls give a session texture a garden cannot. Come toward evening, when the day visitors thin and the low sun rakes across the buildings.

VIII.Midtown murals
Sacramento's midtown grid has become an open-air gallery of large murals, many painted through the Wide Open Walls festival. Brick alleys, painted walls, and corner cafes make a bold, colourful, urban session for couples who do not want a garden. Overcast days work here since the walls, not the sky, carry the colour.

IX.Sacramento Historic City Cemetery
A heritage site near downtown known for its old rose collection and historic plantings, tended by volunteers and open to visitors during posted hours. It is quiet and green, with a sense of age most parks do not have. Check current hours before you plan around it.
